Cerro de Mercado

The Cerro de Mercado deposit, in the urban zone of the capital of the State of Durango, is one of the historic iron minerals in Mexico, exploited since the early nineteenth century to meet the needs of foundries in the country.

Currently operated by Minera del Norte through the CEMESA Unit, it produces iron concentrate that is supplied to the AHMSA plants in Monclova by rail, with a distance of approximately 700 kilometers.

Like the metallurgical coal of the MIMOSA Unit in the Carboniferous Region, the iron concentrate processed by the CEMESA Unit is transported to Monclova by the Coahuila Durango Railroad Company, jointly owned by AHMSA and Industrias Peñoles.
