AMHSA Altos Hornos de México

Subsidiaries Minera del Norte

With advanced equipment and highly qualified personnel, the MICARE Unit annually extracts around 7 million tons of steam coal, destined for the José López Portillo coal-fired power plant, with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts, and Coal II, with a capacity of 1,400 megawatts. Both plants of the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) are located in Nava, Coahuila, and generate about 10 percent of the electric power required by the country.

Created by the state in 1977 to take advantage of the carboniferous wealth, the current MICARE Unit was acquired by Grupo Acerero del Norte (GAN) in 1992 and since 1995 it is part of AHMSA.
